• John Grinder (co-creator of NLP), shares his intentions of creating New Code NLP.
• 3 key differences between NLP and New Code NLP
Before you proceed, it's important to note the following:
NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) was developed by co-creators of NLP - John Grinder, Richard Bandler and Frank Pucelik in the early 1970s. After a successful collaboration that ushered NLP into existence, their paths began to diverge during the late 1970's and they ultimately decided to go their separate ways.
After John Grinder spent countless hours developing the core principles of Neuro Linguistic Programming, he realized that there were some additional refinements and adjustments to be made.
Further, as he says, he found certain "flaws in NLP". Hence he was determined to rectify the flaws and go beyond the limitations. As a result, this lead to the development of his creation of New Code NLP.
"New Code NLP is the Ferrari of NLP" - John Grinder (co-creator of NLP)
Most NLP Trainers in India are not certified by John Grinder as an NLP Trainer and New Code NLP Trainer. Hence are not permitted to facilitate New Code NLP Courses. They are limited to teaching only NLP - also known as Classic Code NLP.
Classic Code NLP (which people usually refer to as NLP) falls under the public domain. Hence NLP courses can be facilitated even after reading an NLP book.
Further, even an NLP Trainers Training course can be facilitated by an "NLP Trainer" who has himself/herself never attended any NLP Trainer Training course.
Therefore navigating the world of NLP training can be difficult since not all NLP Trainers from India are certified by any of the co-creators of NLP for offering NLP trainings (Classic Code NLP Trainings).
On the other hand, New Code NLP is John Grinder's exclusive intellectual rights. Therefore only a select few NLP Trainers and New Code NLP Trainers directly certified by John Grinder as a New Code NLP Trainer, can facilitate New Code NLP Training.
Classic Code NLP has 2 levels - NLP Practitioner and NLP Master Practitioner.
New Code NLP has 1 level i.e. New Code NLP Practitioner.
I (Abhay Thhakkar) am the first NLP Trainer from India to provide both - NLP Trainings (Classic Code NLP Trainings) as well New Code NLP Trainings certified by John Grinder as well as co-developers of New Code NLP - Michael Carroll and Carmen Bostic.
Hence, I am certified to facilitate all 3 courses - NLP Practitioner, NLP Master Practitioner as well as New Code NLP Practitioner Trainings.
(For ease of understanding and to avoid confusion, on this website, when I have mentioned NLP Training or NLP Courses or NLP Workshops, it is referring to both NLP (Classic Code NLP that other NLP Training Institutes in India teach) as well as New Code NLP. On the other hand, on this website page, when I have mentioned NLP, I'm referring to only Classic Code NLP and not New Code NLP.)
“New Code NLP is the Ferrari of NLP" - John Grinder
"New Code NLP is a set of patterns developed in the mid-80s by myself (John Grinder) with contributions initially by Judith Delozier and subsequently by Carmen Bostic St. Clair."
"The motivations for the creation of the New Code NLP are multiple.
They also include a recognition that the coding of patterning I accomplished with Richard Bandler in the creation of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) contained a number of serious coding flaws."
(Hence, the intention of creating New Code NLP was to rectify the flaws in NLP).
In addition, "The New Code NLP takes the design variables of NLP format to the extreme."
- John Grinder (co-creator of NLP)
A question I often get asked is -
"What is the difference between New Code NLP and NLP?" before participants enroll for my New Code NLP certification course in India and abroad. They also include those who have learned NLP before: NLP Coaches - NLP Practitioners, NLP Master Practitioners and NLP Trainers. They too attend since they are keen to upgrade their knowledge and skills as NLP Coaches and stay ahead of the curve in their craft.
The differences shared on this page will also enable you to also gain clarity on –
“What is New Code NLP?”
(Further understanding of New Code NLP can be gained from the course contents shared on the page - New Code NLP Training).
Many NLP Master Practitioners and NLP Trainers from India and abroad who had previously learnt NLP from other NLP Trainers, have already attended my New Code NLP training.
(You can find reviews by many of them on this website).
At the same time, participants with no knowledge of NLP, besides the two days of my NLP Course – NLP coaching - life skills, have gained the same benefits of attending my New Code NLP Training.
In fact, as much benefits as an experienced NLP Trainer who has attended my New Code NLP Certification Training in India or abroad.
(You can find ample of their reviews on this website).
The information I have shared on this page is based on what John Grinder has written in his NLP Book –'Whispering in the Wind'. In addition, I have also added certain information he has told us during his New Code NLP Training which I had attended and was a mentor in.
I have had the privilege of being a mentor in his New Code NLP Certification Course. There were enthusiastic participants from over 45 countries.
Let's now explore 3 of the differences between NLP and New Code NLP, along with an explanation based on what Dr. John Grinder says about the differences.
The Conscious Mind selects critical elements - the outcome, desired state, resources, alternate new behaviours in a situation in which a person desires a change.
Examples of NLP Techniques:
NLP Techniques for Behaviour change - 'New Behaviour Generator'.
Conscious Mind selects the alternate behaviour.
NLP Technique for Accessing and Utilising Resources -
All NLP Anchoring including NLP Kinesthetic/Auditory/ Visual/ Spatial: 'Collapse Anchor', 'Sliding Anchors', 'Chaining Anchors'.
Exception being -Conversational Anchoring.
Conscious Mind selects the resources required.
NLP Tool for Outcome Elicitation - 'Well Formed Outcome'.
Conscious Mind selects the outcome.
As John Grinder says, by using the above mentioned NLP techniques, you (as an NLP coach/NLP Practitioner/NLP Trainer) are simply making (a client) an unhappy robot into a happy robot.
John Grinder on New Code NLP:
"The client's Unconscious Mind is explicitly assigned the responsibility for selecting the critical elements - the desired state, the resource, or the new behaviours."
While John Grinder was creating New Code NLP, he recognised that one of the most powerful NLP technique/tool/pattern is the '6 Step Reframing'. In fact, the '6 step reframing' is the only NLP technique/tool in which the Unconscious Mind selects the alternate behaviour required in a situation.
Consequently, this inspired him to create New Code NLP in which the Unconscious Mind is much more involved. As a result, it is, in fact, the '6 step reframing' that is the bridge between NLP and New Code NLP. The '6 Step Reframing' is also considered as the 'breakthrough pattern'.
Thus, through the New Code NLP techniques/tools/activities, the Unconscious Mind is activated. Consequently, the Unconscious Mind selects the appropriate behaviour, state and outcome which is most appropriate.
"Patients are patients because they are not in rapport with their unconscious mind"
- Dr. Milton Erickson.
Power of Unconscious Mind
You are already probably aware of the power of the Unconscious Mind.
The activation of your Unconscious Mind enables you to go beyond conscious limitation. Thereby enabling you to achieve much more than what you can think you can achieve in your life.
"The great secret possessed by the great men of all ages was their ability to contact and release the powers of the sub-conscious mind. You can do the same"
- Joseph Murphy, author of Power of Subconscious Mind.
Kindly note: I'm aware that theoretically, there are differences between the Sub-Conscious Mind and Unconscious Mind. However, for the purpose of simplicity on the website, I have used the term Sub-Conscious Mind and Unconscious Mind interchangeably.
(Resources usually include emotions such as calm, peace, happy which enables us to deal with the situation in a much more empowered manner)
NLP Techniques involve accessing the resources through tapping into memories.
There are a few limitations to it:
1 - A person may not remember when he experienced the emotions.
2 - Certain individuals, such as digital personality (mind ruled personality), may not feel a resourceful state completely in their body.
3 - The memory that a person is accessing, may have unpleasant associations.
For example: As an NLP coach, I was working with a client using an NLP technique of anchoring in which she needed to take a resource from memory. During the process, the client regressed to the memory of her birthday when she was 8 years old. While she was accessing the positive resource of that memory, I noticed a tear in her eye. She revealed that the memory involved her father giving her a gift. However, since her father is not alive anymore, it brought about sadness in her.
John Grinder:
"The unconscious mind is explicitly involved in all the critical steps of the pattern (New Code NLP techniques & tools)."
"One of the fundamental strategies behind the New Code NLP was to develop a set of activities or games that lead naturally to the activation in the player of a content-free, high-performance state."
In New Code NLP, the resources are accessed by activating the Unconscious Mind through New Code NLP Games and other activities.
Moreover, the Unconscious Mind activates the resources automatically without accessing a memory.
Hence, New Code NLP is effective even if a person is detached from feelings or is unable to access the resources from the past.
Many NLP techniques and tools involve addressing a person's specific behavior.
Example of NLP Technique: 'New Behaviour Generator'.
The New Code NLP techniques and tools involve addressing at the level of state (biochemistry and neurology) rather than the behaviour.
John Grinder says that the state is at a higher logical level than behaviour.
Hence, by changing the state, the behaviour automatically changes.
Furthermore, by changing the state, you not only change one behaviour but also, many behaviours simultaneously.
"Further, experiences with these patterns of unconscious mind access (in New Code NLP) seem to lead to what we have come to call the disciplined as know-nothing state."
"A fundamental aspect of New Code NLP is creating choice in your own life and freely having access to high-performance states."
- John Grinder (co-creator of NLP and New Code NLP)
