Why read the history of NLP?
Although the full form of NLP is Neuro Linguistic Programming, there are many definitions of NLP. Hence, to gain clarity on the definitions and meaning of NLP, I will first share how NLP was developed. Subsequently, I will share about NLP, its benefits, and which professions benefit from learning it.
NLP began it's life in the early 1970s when Dr. John Grinder, Richard Bandler and Frank Pucelik got together to embark on their now-legendary work.
All three of them had a passion for understanding human behaviour. What fascinated them, in particular, was understanding what geniuses are doing differently which yields them the results they achieve. Consequently, this chartered a path for them to learn and apply what geniuses do.
First, they selected to study the patterns of genius inherent in:
• Dr. Milton Erickson (Hypnotherapist)
• Fritz Perls (founder of Gestalt Therapy)
• Virginia Satir (Family Therapist)
The three were known as geniuses because they were consistently gaining successful results in enabling their clients in healing and achieving the outcome of their therapy sessions. Further, their success rate was much higher than other therapists during that time and they were achieving much quicker results too.
However, the geniuses could not present Dr. John Grinder, Richard Bandler and Frank Pucelik with a conscious description of what they were specifically doing, which facilitated transformations in the lives of the clients who came to them.
Hence, through a methodology known as NLP Modelling, they decoded the behavioural, communication patterns that geniuses were applying during therapy.
The decoding of patterns was so astonishingly accurate that when they applied those patterns, they too began achieving similar results as the geniuses. As a result, the field of NLP was born.
Therefore, NLP Modelling is the core activity of NLP and NLP is known as the study of excellence.
“NLP is a modelling technology that focuses on the differences that make the differences between the performances of geniuses and average performers in the same field of activity. The objective of modelling is to illustrate those differences in a transferable and learnable way. The core activity of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the mapping of tacit knowledge onto an explicit model.”
-John Grinder and Carmen Bostic St Clair (NLP Book - Whispering in the Wind)
“Genius is not confined to well-known celebrities. There is a genius in everyone.”
– John Grinder (co-creator of NLP)
Subsequently, the co-creators of NLP recognised that geniuses are in every field of human endeavour. Hence thereafter, a vast amount of work was done by the co-creators of NLP and co-developers of NLP. As a result, several NLP methodologies, techniques, and tools have been developed to enhance the quality of life of people from every walk of life.
NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming, can now be applied for life-changing advancements, thereby enabling each person to experience greater fulfillment in life.
To gain an understanding of the full form of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), let’s dive into the world of NLP with an activity now.
- Look around the room you are in and count the number of objects in black colour.
Answer:
How many objects did you count which are in white?
Since your focus was on counting the number of objects in black colour, you didn’t notice many objects in white colour. Isn’t it?
This concept is called 'deletion'. Since at a neurological level, you deleted certain information. Similarly, were you aware of the sensation on your feet until I’m asking you to do that now?
Now let’s explore each of the terms of NLP i.e. Neuro Linguistic Programming. Thereby giving us further insights into what NLP is.
☯ Neuro – Neurology
There are millions of bits of information around you right now and at every moment. However, there are certain limitations to the amount of information you can absorb through your senses. For instance, you cannot see bacteria with your naked eyes, but it exists, isn’t it?
However, you can train your neurology to receive much more information from the world around you. Consequently, this will enable you to become closer to reality and not get stuck with your perceptions of the world. You will spend ample time training at a neurological level in my NLP training courses, thereby going beyond your perceptions which you are carrying.
Did you know?
There are many more than 5 senses and no, I don’t mean to include the 6th sense.
☯ Linguistic
Linguistic is the language/ word/label we give to the information we receive through our senses.
Our experiences, beliefs and values determine the word we give to the information we receive through the senses.
For instance,
Experiences: We call an apple an apple because, in our childhood, we were taught what an apple looks like. Although maybe for the generations to come, apple could only mean an iMac.
Beliefs and Values: Stealing is labeled “bad” because, since childhood, we were taught that. Although, on a lighter note, stealing someone’s heart may not be considered "bad” after all.
Interestingly, we can experience our realities differently by changing or modifying our language.
An activity you could now do is to affirm the following 4 sentences.
(Repeat the first sentence multiple times till you can feel emotions or sensations in your body. Thereafter, repeat the same for the second sentence a few times).
1 - I would love to complete my work on time.
2 - I can complete my work on time.
3 - I must complete my work on time.
4 - I should complete my work on time.
What differences did you notice?
NLP is a study of subjective experience. Hence each person doing the above activity could have a different experience.
However, what we can conclude is that words impact our neurology.
In your life, you might have experienced that certain words said to you by someone have given you immense joy. Also, some words have hurt you. Hasn’t it?
Hence, being mindful of our words is the key to experiencing a different reality. Moreover, the words we use to communicate with ourselves is the key to living a fulfilling life.
“Communication is to relationship, what breath is to life” – Virginia Satir.
Additionally, language is an organ of our perception.
Hence, one of the key essences of NLP is language. Therefore, in my NLP courses, we spend ample time learning and experiencing being mindful of our communication and becoming much more influential communicators.
“Words can inspire. And words can destroy. Choose yours well” - Robin Sharma.
☯ Programming: Programming is the behaviours/ actions/ habits we do.
As a result of the connection between the Neuro and Linguistics, we are programmed in a certain way.
Certain behaviours/actions we do on an ongoing basis are giving us the desired results we would like.
On the other hand, certain behaviours we are doing are not generating the outcome we desire. Hence, the key to achieving the desired outcome is to change our programming.
“Insanity is when you keep doing the same thing and are expecting a different result.”
– Albert Einstein
During my NLP courses, there are many methods, NLP techniques, and tools that participants learn and experience, which enable them to change their inner programming.
“Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) identifies a connection between the neurology, language and behavioural patterns we learn through experiences.
If used properly, it can be restructured to achieve specific goals.”
- John Grinder (co-creator of NLP and New Code NLP)
Some of the common aspects of life that participants of my NLP courses choose to address are:
• Relationship issues. Such as a child not listening. Disliking behaviour of partner, in-laws.
• Overcoming anxiety, fear, trauma, sadness.
• Experiencing more confidence, happiness, calmness, peacefulness, and relaxation.
• Overcoming procrastination.
• Overcoming addictions.
• Enhancing public performances such as dance, singing, and public speaking.

“NLP is a life changer. You lose nothing and gain a great thinking process.” - Frank Pucelik.
Learning NLP enables us to understand how we can effectively think, feel and behave in those aspects of our life where we seek changes.
Since as you are probably aware, if we keep doing what we have been doing, we will keep getting what we have. Hence, the key is to take responsibility for our life and generate new thoughts and behaviours, enabling us to create changes in our lives.
“In life, you are given a bag of moments and you don’t know how many you are having. Learning NLP is about maximizing these moments.” – Richard Bandler.
“New Code NLP is the Ferrari of NLP” – John Grinder (co-creator of NLP)
In New Code NLP, we take the variables of NLP to the extreme.
